How are Teeth cleaning and polishing done?
Teeth scaling, cleaning, and polishing is typically performed by a dentist or dental hygienist. The procedure is usually done in the dental office and typically takes around 30-60 minutes to complete.
The first step of the procedure is teeth scaling. During this step, the dentist or hygienist will use a special instrument called a scaler to remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque also called calculus) from the surface of the teeth.
The hand scaler is a metal instrument that has a small, hooked tip that is used to scrape the plaque and tartar from the teeth. The scaler is used to remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth, along the gum line, and in between the teeth.
After the scaling is completed, the next step is cleaning.
During this step, the dentist or hygienist will use a special tool called a prophy cup to polish the teeth.
The prophy cup is a small rubber cup that is attached to a dental drill.
The cup is filled with a fine abrasive paste and is used to remove surface stains and discoloration from the teeth. This step is called cleaning.
Finally, the last step is polishing.
During this step, the dentist or hygienist will use a special polishing paste that is applied to the surface of the teeth with a rotating brush. This helps to smooth and polish the tooth enamel, leaving the teeth feeling smooth and looking shiny.
It’s important to note that teeth scaling, cleaning, and polishing can cause some sensitivity for some people. However, this sensitivity is usually temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication.
Regular teeth scaling and cleaning can help to prevent tooth decay and gum disease, while teeth polishing can help to improve the appearance of the teeth.
